Abstract

The native flora with forage characteristics is relevant in the agricultural sector due to food shortages in times of drought. For a plant to be considered as a quality forage should be palatable, have high nutritional value complying with appropriate levels of fiber, organic matter, protein, moisture and good digestibility to mention some. In the state of Hidalgo, Mexico, have a number of native grasses as the main source of animal feed from small producers. The advantage of the native flora of cultivated forages is tolerance to environmental conditions of the place, however the rotational grazing is needed to achieve recovery of native grasses and a suitable exploitation taking into account various aspects such as stocking rate, occupation and rest period, grazing intensity, among others. This paper reviews some native species from state of Hidalgo which are used as fodder and are classified as legumes and grasses, except Atriplex canescens this species is not found between these two groups, but it can not be omitted due to their importance in arid regions of the state.
